Every road-legal car built since 1981 carries a 17-character Vehicle Identification Number, and on most vehicles that number is also encoded as a barcode you can read with an ordinary phone. Unlike a product barcode at a store, a VIN barcode usually doesn't need a lookup service at all: the code itself is just the VIN, spelled out in a format a scanner can grab in one pass instead of you typing 17 characters by hand.

How do I scan a VIN barcode?

Where is the VIN barcode located on a car?
The most common location is the driver's side door jamb sticker, the white or silver label where the door latches to the body, which also lists tire pressure specs and paint codes. Barcodes also commonly appear on the window sticker (Monroney label) attached to a new car and, on many vehicles, printed on the title or registration document.
Not every place you see the VIN written down includes a barcode. The dashboard plate visible through the windshield and the VIN stamped into the frame or engine bay are almost always text only, since those are meant for a human to read at a glance rather than to be scanned. What data is encoded in a VIN barcode?
A VIN barcode encodes exactly one thing: the 17-character Vehicle Identification Number itself, as plain text, with nothing else attached. There's no history, ownership, or registration data hidden inside it, and no encryption to worry about.
The VIN's structure follows ISO 3779: a 3-character World Manufacturer Identifier, a 6-character Vehicle Descriptor Section covering model and body details, and an 8-character Vehicle Identifier Section that includes the model year, plant code, and a sequential serial number. The standard excludes the letters I, O, and Q to avoid confusion with 1 and 0, so every valid VIN character is a digit or one of the remaining 23 letters.
Because the barcode is just a faster way to capture that string, decoding it only gets you the VIN, not a vehicle history report.
